The Weeping Birch is a very beautiful small hardy deciduous tree with a dome-shaped crown of arching branches which weep to the ground as they grow. Known for its attractive peeling bark which lightens pink and white as it ages. Delicate soft green ovate leaves colour well in autumn. Male and female catkins are found on the same tree, opening before or with the leaves in spring. Weeping Silver Birch are happiest in sunlight with well-drained moist soil. ‘Youngii’ Silver Birch trees tolerate urban pollution, drought, wet soil, cold temperatures, and strong winds. Steeped in symbolism, Birches support many species of birds, insects, and animals.
The Silver Birch is known as the Lady of the Wood and the Tree of Enchantment and should only be pruned in late winter before dormancy, never in the spring.
