The star magnolia is one of the earliest magnolias to bloom in March and April giving much pleasure with its profusion of fragrant many white flowers opening from silky buds. The deep green leaves are an attractive elegant narrow shape. A compacted rounded specimen, usually wider than high.
They need a sunny or partial shady sheltered spot and prefer a neutral to acid fertile, well-drained soil. They will tolerate most soils provided it is humus rich. Plenty of organic matter should be dug into the soil before planting. During its youth, weed, mulch and compost in spring.
A very beautiful shrub-like tree, it can be grown successfully in a small garden or container. Slow growing, the height in maturity seldom reaches 3m x 3m / 10ft x 10ft.
