The black Mulberry was originally from China and adopted by the Empire. Exceptionally long lived with a crown of beautiful heart-shaped foliage and a gnarled trunk which grows into a wonderful shape. In maturity it bears sweet juicy deep purple berries in late September, delicious to eat with cream and sugar and makes one of the best jams around. (The leaves are also a favourite with silk worms who weave their marvellous silken cocoons).
Fully hardy, likes sun and a moist, well-drained soil.
